“I am feeling anxious about the move, mom and dad. Help! Woof!”

Change is inevitable in this life, and our fur babies have to experience this right along with us. Moving is just one of those events that can be very stressful for humans, let alone our animals. But the good news is that there are ways you can help your small dog prepare for your move, and ease them into their new living environment.

Help Your Small Dog Prepare For Your Move

Sooner or later, many of us will have to do it: Relocate to a new home with dogs. Moving is traumatic enough for humans, so you can only imagine how difficult it can be for canine household members. Everything they knew is going away and, while there may be familiar things and smells, it’s still going to be a completely different place.

So, how can you prepare your dogs for a move?

Planning Ahead

Obviously, you will know long before your dog does that you’re going to be changing living situations. The key is to not make the transition abrupt, if at all possible. If you’re moving within a reasonable distance from where you live now, then start early by taking your dog to the new neighborhood and walking her there. This will get her used to the new smells and sights. Read more about Dogs and Moving in Packing Up the Pack here.

Even though your fur baby(s) is going to a new environment, these great tips will help your small dog prepare for your move, and give you and your family peace of mind that this can be a smooth transition rather than a traumatic one. When it comes to acclimating to a new environment, you can also help your dog in these ways:

  • Take them on walks or to the park
  • Keep as many as your familiar routines going as possible
  • Allow them to have an area where they get to enjoy their favorite toys and/or treats
  • Give them extra attention

You will be surprised at how fast your small dog is able to adapt to their new home!
